After hearing two presentations about looks and body image and reading the Prom Draft article in the last week, I have grown curious as to how severe the whole prom season dieting situation really is. I did some research, and as it turns out, events such as prom and weddings are the worst culprits for starting unhealthy eating patterns and toxic lifestyles. Eating next to nothing is not a viable way to live for more than a few hours (possibly days), but it has become the obsession of many teens over this prom season to do so for weeks and months. The way that society portrays the "attractive woman" in the media is how young adults believe that they must look in order to be considered beautiful or sexy on their prom night.
Honestly this topic frustrates me to no end. What most teens don't see is that prom is supposed to be fun and about being unique and special in your own way (just like every other day of the year). It should not be turned into a contest of who can lose the most weight or get the darkest spray tan without anyone noticing. By being unhealthy to get ready for an event such as prom, one opens the door to a possible lifelong struggle with eating disorders. So... I think that parents, schools and peers should advocate for the recognition and acceptance of individualized beauty and must not look to the media for the norms of beauty and sex appeal.
What do you guys think?
