Is Disney the problem?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/quora/why-is-disney-still-makin_b_4565482.html

A lot of people blame Barbie for this unrealistic ideal body for young girls but does Disney also play a part in it? Disney has been around a lot longer than barbie and you have to consider that maybe it's Disney's fault young girls think they have to be slim and slender to find themselves a prince charming. If you look at all their princesses even today's princesses they're all the same body type just different facial features and ethnicity. Pretty interesting read, thoughts...

  1. It makes you wonder, if during the production and animation of these films, the idea was to portray the women like in a certain way. But I think there has been progress by Disney, with diverse characters such as Tiana from Princess and the Frog, or Mulan.

  2. I honestly never looked at Disney princesses as promoting an unrealistic body image. I always thought it was the Barbies but now that i think about it, i feel like Disney does have a part in it. Although, i feel like Disney just makes young girls thing that if you look as pretty as them then you might be able to find your prince charming. I feel like its more about the looks and the exact body image, like looking at their makeup and their dresses. I agree with Jendri as well because there is more diversity within the characters.

  3. Wow. I'm really glad that you brought up this idea because I feel the exact same way. I've definitely noticed that the physical size of a Disney Princess hasn't changed. But as a little girl I never thought that I needed to look that way in order to get Prince Charming but now that I am older I get constant compliments on my looks how I am pretty but even then, my own mom tells me the reason why I haven't found my Prince Charming is because I'm a big girl. She thinks that if I were to drop a few then I would get a Prince Charming in a heart beat but even then everyone is flawed, I think my Prince Charming will like me with all my flaws and with nothing more. Having a little sister who watches Disney religiously, she has never expressed feels about wanting to look like the Disney Princesses. But It makes you wonder why there aren't plus size Disney Characters.... I mean even bad character are portrayed as slim. (Ex: Sleeping Beauty's Step Mother)

  4. I was thinking the same to be honest even before I read all of your blog. All the princesses of the Disney have that hour glass figure. It's not possible to be tall, skinny and still look great. If you're that tall and skinny in real life, you would look sick, pale and boney. I don't think that the Disney princess figure will ever be reachable.
