Can your smartphone make you a bad samaritan??

Back a few months ago we were talking about good and bad samaritans, well I found a really interesting article that I thought was worth sharing.

http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304402104579151850028363502

The article goes on to talk about how people can be so engrossed in their smartphones or tablets that they aren't aware enough of their surroundings to realize danger. The first example they mention in the article is really amazing that a gunman can wave a gun around on a train platform and no one would see till he fired off a shot and killed a man. I think its too bad sometimes that everyone is too engrossed in their virtual lives that they walk around like zombies in public sometimes.

Check it out!

  1. This story is so depressing, not only because someone was killed, but because something like this actually happened! I see people walking across the street looking at their phone which is soooo dangerous and phones seem to be a way to avoid confrontation. I do this myself sometimes, when it's just me and someone who I don't know walking through the school halls I pull out my phone and start looking at, well just the screen, but the other person actually does the same exact thing. I don't know why this happens, but sometimes people just don't want to deal with their surroundings. In this article though it cost someone their life.
One time when I visited my Grandma on Grandparents day my sister and I went to a short little show that was about 'when I was their age'. Anyways, after the show the man who was presenting thanked my sister and I for not looking at our phones during the presentation. After that talk I realized that not only can the constant checking and playing with our phones be dangerous but it can also be pretty rude. After he thanked us, I have decided to only use my phone when it's really necessary, like answering phone calls or catching up with emails or responding to messages. Why play games or go shopping on your phone in public when you can have a real conversation or enjoy a beautiful day. But most importantly if one was in a situation like the one in the article it can potentially save you your life.

  2. I think phones have become a target simply because of the fact that they are accessible and portable, but the issue comes down to technology in general. Since the invention of the computer our society has become increasingly more unaware of their surroundings. We just put on our headphones at get lost, disconnect. While this can be positive in some cases I believe, and as Braden's example further proves, we have become too dependent upon technology and we are starting to see the danger of a totally engrossed society. I do honestly fear for the coming generations who have had unbridled access to these technological marvels since their birth. I supposed we will never truly know the effects and dangers as a whole but the signs are beginning to become more apparent.

  3. Wow this is so true because a lot of times i can see my little brothers watching TV or playing on their iPads and i would be walking right past them multiple times and when but they don't move they just keep staring at the TV i just blocked. And there have been many times where i have tried to call them over to do something and they just can hear me not because they have headphones on but because they are in another world. In my opinion electronics are bad samaritans because of the distractions they can cause.
