Fitbit

A few of you may have noticed a black band on your parents wrist.  This is probably a fit bit.  In essence, all a fit bit does is count the number of steps you take in a day.  Supposedly, that will motivate people to get fit.  When my dad first told me this, I thought it was a laughable waste of money.  However, since then, I've noticed both of my parents spending an extra five or so hours a week walking around the block.  How does this simple device motivate people?  I think the motivation is in the competition the band creates both against other fit bit users and the three dots that light up on the band when you get to 10000 steps in a day.

  1. I agree about the competition aspect. My parents gave me the equivalent of a Fitbit in preschool (called a SportsBrain) and I remember feeling obligated to beat the rest of my family members in number of steps when we all compared at the end of the day. I ran in circles and up and down my street trying desperately to "win", even though there was no prize. It think the whole craze around the Fitbit is a bit strange, however I do think that the concept is powerful. It is all about making yourself aware of how active you are, and helping you set goals to achieve a greater level of activity on a daily basis.
