Dropping the atomic bomb

I was reading other post about dropping the bomb on japan and I was thinking what would happen if we dropped the bomb but instead of japan surrendering they continued to fight? What would the US do if japan didn't stop fighting? Would the US continue to drop atomic bombs?

  1. I would assume the U.S would continue dropping bombs, since they planned to approach the situation that way. But to be brutally honest, I'm not sure how much of a fight Japan would have been able to give... The bombs took a very large toll on the nation.

  2. Japan would be well, crazy, if they decided to fight after the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. America was way too powerful at that point so the Japanese soldiers would not stand a chance. Although, I have read that the Japanese air-force was willing to do the Kamikaze attacks earlier in the war because they believed that dying for their country was true honor, the noblest thing they could do for their people. Honor meant a lot to the Japanese, if they died for their country their family would be respected in society. So, I'm bringing this up because it is kind of interesting that the Japanese actually surrendered instead of holding out until they had absolutely nothing more to give.
I don't think America would have dropped another nuclear bomb because that would be a waste of money and completely unnecessary since the Japanese were only hanging by a thread. I agree with Austin about the fact that Japan didn't have ample supplies and they were just low on people, and even though Japan had a strong morale they were too exhausted to continue fighting. So, I believe the U.S. would maybe drop 'regular' bombs to finish them off, but because of money reasons and it was not necessary I don't think Japan would have seen and third mushroom cloud.

  3. Given that, in this example, the Japanese would have continued fighting after a detonation of two atomic bombs, I do not think the United States would risk going back to smaller less lethal bombing tactics. Even if holding by a thread, the honorable Japanese at that point would literally fight to the last man. I do not know many nations that would fight after 1 nuclear bomb but the Japanese did and if they remained unwavering after 2, I believe the United States would have no choice but to continue to atom bomb the country until they submitted.
