Yesterday I had to pick up my little sister from school and it wasn't until my mom told that there was no one that could watch her, that I realized I was going to be stuck with her. I really need to do homework so I decided to stay in my car and work on homework until my mom could come get her from me . She kept complaining that she was bored and I kept telling her to do her homework but she said she didn't have any and she starting to get on my nerves so I just said here's my phone play games. She immediately got really happy. Thats when I started to think what is it about electronics that has kids brainwashed at such an early age? I mean I was never dependent of electronics as a kid. I remember getting my first phone in 5th grade but I only used it to call my mom none of my friends had phone yet, and my sister is a 1st grader and she says that she wants a phone. And I'm more than positive that she has already convinced my mom to get her and iPad mini for Christmas what is a 6 year old going to do with an iPad? It's very scary that technology is taking over the new generations childhood what happened to playing hide and seek and coloring books and playing with dolls it's all being tossed out like an old doll with a missing arm. There is no exciment in their lives without electronics and I think it's really sad.

I totally agree with you my little cousin in Guatemala at age 5 got and nitendo ds my little brother was about three at the time and he wanted one too but because my step dad thought that he was to little he decided not to get him one but my older cousin had and iPod and had games and my little 3 year old brother under stood how to play with it and how everything worked so my step dad got him and iPod at age 3 packed with games. At 4 I gave him my Nintendo DS and at age 5 as in now he has my Nintendo DS, my Play station 2, his own personal iPod , and my moms iPad. he is only 5 years old and he has all the electronic surrounding him I think it isn't right when I was 7 I still did coloring books and now he does tha too but prefers phone or ipad
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree that this is alarming and potentially a serious problem, we have to take a step back. Couldn't each generation and look at the advancements made and how the newest generation is spoiled? I remember my mom was shocked that we learned to use computers in school (I'm talking Oregon Trail days) instead of typewriters and how privileged we are for having google to research instead of having to go to the library. Also couldn't this just be a sign of us moving into a new era as a society? After making major developments, wouldn't the only proof of really moving on to accepting them as part of our culture be for them to infiltrate every part of our life, including young children? I might be playing devil's advocate here, as I agree it is a bit excessive how attached kids are and at such a young age, but it still is another way to look at the issue.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up with a lot of cousins we were always wrestling and playing tag or having relay races around the block and we played with other neighborhood kids. Now I barely see kids outside playing at all. My nieces and nephews all would rather watch TV than play outsids, and they see electronics as the only form of play which is unfortunate. It's not only kids blinded by electronics, it's teens as well. We're all so busy trying to stay virtually connected to people that we forget how to actually interact with others. For some people it's easier to express themselves through text. Growth is good and has made life easier but I wonder how much farther it can go. With all these technological advances human intellect is beginning to suffer. I was in the library the other day and I overheard a conversation between my fellow peers and this girl was complaining about how she couldn't get any work done because she needed a dictionary and she didn't know how to use one. I even see people use calculators for basic math problems. This new wave of technology may seem great for the time being but what's going to happen when they start serving purposes humans are for, then what will our purpose be?
