Its the holidays!!

Hey guys so I know we have been talking about the holocaust and death and stuff but I've got something a little different to share today that could restore some faith in humanity for some of you.
So i just got off of work about an hour ago and i was working at the first window of the drive thru at in n out (this is where people pay for their food) and i would say happy holidays to every customer right before they left to the next window. So when i said this to one man he seemed overjoyed with the fact that i told him "happy holidays" and he told me that he would like me to put his meal as well as the next person in line on his card. And all he wanted me to say to the next person was happy holidays. I did exactly what he told me to the next person in line and they were so overjoyed that they decided they would pay for the next car in line as well. This continued for 9 cars all with people just deciding to pay for the next persons meal because its the holidays.
This was amazing to me because studying the holocaust the past couple weeks has made me view humanity a little different and has showed me that we are capable of many horrific things but having an event like this happen has restored some of my faith in humanity, and hopefully some of your faith as well.

Comment if you have any similar stories.

  1. Good for you! The holidays, for some reason, bring out the best in people. Some become more generous with their money (as in this case) while others become more generous with their time and other such things. The holiday season is one of my favorite times of year, because most everyone is cheerful and willing to be kind to one another. You are very right in that simple things like what happened in line at In-n-Out today further my faith in humanity and all of the good that we can do, and I am glad you shared with us.

Learning about the Holocaust and all of the tragedies that went along with it has been kind of depressing, and a little bit scary, but I think it has opened our eyes more and more to the things, both good and bad, that happen around us. Learning about events such as the Holocaust in Global, I believe, have helped you appreciate this small act of kindness even more than you would have before.

This also circles back to the whole idea of “mob mentality” and how people act either with kindness when they see others acting kindly, such as this example, or with brutality when they see others acting brutally, such as in the Holocaust. (It makes me think of that story you shared with us earlier in the year about how your little sibling got lost while in San Francisco, and everyone just kept walking, even as he was crying, until the policeman showed up.) By studying this unit, we are all aware that, when put into certain situations, humans can be beyond cruel to one another, however, I think it is wonderful that you have come to the equally powerful realization that we are capable of making kind hearted decisions as well, and we have the choice to be good or evil.

  2. I think that random acts of kindness are really cool. I read a similar story about this happening in a Detroit Starbucks here's the link if anyone wants to read it http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2013/11/nearly_60_consecutive_customer.html but I think that I myself might do something like this for the heck it to make someone's day just a bit better

  3. Doing these acts can easily spread. I don't believe it just happens around the holidays, I believe that there are plenty of other acts of kindness that had been done without a reason and just continue to spread. Thinking about I can say that around the Holidays it can definitely boost the amount of random acts of kindness.

  4. That was nice of you Victor to show some Holiday spirit! Sometimes a little bit can go a long way! As for the customers' who decided to pay for the car behind them, I think it plays into the idea of "Paying it Forward", allowing a person to pass on a good deed to someone else having been given or shown the same kindness. Everyone needs a "Secret Santa" once in awhile!

  5. Good deeds are contagious. Seeing somebody else do something nice and spontaneous makes most people want to do something nice and spontaneous. Hearing about this makes me want to do a random act of kindness. Bad deeds may also be contagious. Witnessing an event that we perceive as bad makes the average person angry and can cause us to seek revenge or an outlet for anger. Good deeds work the same way in that we see one and seek an outlet for our joy.
