Many of us will be pursuing higher education after we graduate, heading off to all ends of the country and even off to different countries (Gus). We will all run into the barriers of massive costs in college, some of may be lucky enough to have our parents cover most cost but other will have to make it through on their own dollar and student loans. Rising costs of tuition across the country will affect all of us. However a College in Missouri has been looking at tuition very differently for a long time. Its called College of the Ozarks and none of its 1,400 students are paying any tuition. Instead the College puts its students to work every week instead of accepting tuition. Each student works 15 hours a week at college owned restaurants, power plant, fire station, lodge, museum, and dairy farm. Even part of the student GPA is determined by how they do in a job. Graduates leave with on job experience, value of hard work, and a tremendous value of education. 90% of graduates even in this bad economy are getting jobs! The college pays for operating expenses off of a $400 million endowment and has been open since 1906. The message from the author of this article is why don't big Universities offer the same thing for their students, the universities have large endowments that they could use to run a system like this. Students from top tier universities graduate with something like $150,000-$200,000 in debt! If a top university could start a system like this they may make their universities more available to middle class kids and provide work experience to their students. Check out the article! Its worth the read!
