Privileges

Over the past two days in class we watched a video about Privileges and how certain people get preferential treatment over others. For example a celebrity might get to cut a large line or get preferential treatment at a store, because of their fame. How much should we care about these privileges that are given to certain people? Should we even care at all? I think we shouldn't care about these privileges even if it’s unfair, because there will always be someone who has more of something than you. Whether it be money, fame, looks, etc.

  1. You do bring a good point about how we shouldn't care and that life isn't fair but I personally think we should care. Morally I think it's wrong for one to be accepted to a school because of privileges. Denying someone who deserves and worked so hard to earn a spot in one of the top schools is just wrong. Why give an education to someone who's grades weren't that good, they didn't put much effort to getting into a school academically over someone who is determined and ready for a certain school. That's denying someone's education who can one day find a cure for cancer or come up with bright ideas. Yes both students can come up with bright ideas but one over the other is more likely to come up with bright ideas. Most students I predict just use their privileges to get into schools because of the fame that school has not because of the education. If you didn't work hard to get into something then you certainly shouldn't be allowed the spot in a school verses someone who did work hard to earn that spot. Thats just my opinion.

  2. I don't think we should care about giving celebrities special treatment, but when it comes down to it I think most of us would. If we saw our favorite singer, actor, or athlete in public then we would probably be "star struck." So in our nature we will treat them differently then ordinary people. I work at a hardware store downtown Los Altos and occasionally Sergey Brin will come in. I notice that my boss and other co-workers treat him better than the rest of our customers. Although he is a co-founder of Google, that doesn't mean we should treat him differently than the rest of our customers.
