Addicted to Social Media

Throughout high school, I've wasted countless hours on Facebook, my cell phone, and other forms of social media.  I am betting I am not the only one.  I can't recall finding much joy in these activities.  Months ago, I realized this and attempted to go off the grid.  I wanted to see how long I could last without Facebook, or twitter. At the time my cell phone usage wasn't a problem because I had a flip phone.  It took a few months before I wasn't tempted any more, but I am proud to say I have not checked my twitter since.  Facebook, on the other hand, cracked me in a matter of weeks. Since then, I have failed a few more times at disconnecting from Facebook.

What is the source of this addiction?  What brings me back to Facebook every time is my curiosity about my inbox, or if there were any posts involving me during my absence.  It seems our addiction to Facebook may be related more to self-promotion than the actual entertainment aspect of the site.
